Silence in the Face of Evil

Silence in the Face of Evil

It is easy to justify the reasons for why we are not taking a stand. Why we are not speaking up.

Most of them are likely reasonable and even valid.

But I often think about this quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and what it means to not speak, he said:

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will NOT hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

So, what does this mean? What is our obligation?

Today I heard more about the steps Canada is taking to provide their citizens with assisted death.

Not just for those who are terminally ill (which is terrible), but even for teens who are depressed.

That is evil.

In America we are mutilating children and allowing the to “change” their genders.

That is evil.

In elementary schools we are introducing children to pornography under the guise of “sex education.” We are indoctrinating them with filth and untruth.

That is evil.

The list could go on, and on, and on.

Even if we disagree with these things, is that enough?

I believe this is where Bonhoeffer's quote becomes relevant.

Silence in the face of these evils is evil itself.

We have to be better than taking the backseat on these issues and silently disagreeing.

God expects us to stand for truth.

I believe we will be sorely mistaken if we believe that just disagreeing with these actions is enough.

We WILL be held accountable for what we did – or didn’t do - to speak up and defend God and His truth.

This will look different for everyone.

I am not talking about getting on social media and engaging in toxic conversation.

What I do believe we should be doing is fortifying ourselves spiritually.

Teaching truth in our homes.

Building our neighborhoods and communities.

Being actively involved in our church.

Putting out a message of truth on whatever medium we choose.

There is real power in defending and testifying of the truth.

I want to encourage each of us to NOT be silent in the face of evil.

If we want God to defend us in our time of need, we MUST be willing to defend Him and His truth!
